Tips for Fire Doors Installations

Fire doors are not ordinary or simple doors installed in commercial or residential premises. They are carefully engineered and designed fire safety equipment and are critical to the overall safety of the building and its occupants. Fire door installations and assemblies are fundamental to their performance as it ensures the reliability of the door to its fire integrity rating in case a fire breaks out and perform accordingly.

Proper installation is as important as buying the right product. Make sure you check the construction around the fire door and it should be the same rating as the fire door assembly itself.

There are certain things you should check at the time of fire door installation.

  • Check the specification of the frame to ensure it matches the rating of the fire door.
  • Ensure any gaps between the wall and door frame are tightly packed with the apt fire stopping material like glass wool or mineral.
  • Is the fire door certificated? The plug or label on the frame and door should represent any certification and provide necessary links to the information you need. If not, what information or details are given to support that it will perform as a fire door.
  • Look for the ironmongery specified to make sure it is compatible with the door.
  • Don’t cut apertures on site. Look for professional assistance. Any alteration to the site might negate any certification that the door has and who is responsible for performance.
  • Proper and complete documentation should be provided with the fire door and it should include fitting instructions. Ensure you adhere to them for correct installation.
  • Accurate intumescent seals should be installed with the fire door.

Once the installation is completed, check for the following.

  • Make sure the door closes firmly onto the latch, no matter what the angle is. Check that it closes even if opened halfway, a few inches, and from the fully opened position.
  • Are there three hinges? Are there any missing screws? Are they all firmly fixed? Does the assembly of door call for intumescent ads behind the hinges? If yes, are they present?
  • If the fire door is installed in common areas in flats or in a non-domestic building, check for the presence of relevant signage on it.
  • Does the fire door close soundly and aptly against the frame? Are the voids around the door less than 3 to 4 mm and consistent when closed? Are there any chunks, splits, or cracks missing from the door?
  • Can you see light through the door’s gap at the bottom of the door? If you see so, check the documentation to make sure that the maximum clearance has not been exceeded?

These are a few things you can pay attention to during the fire doors installations. Regular maintenance is of utmost importance to make sure they perform aptly. It should be regularly checked both mechanically and visually to ensure proper function because even a slight alteration to the fire door or its surroundings can hamper its movement and overall function. Occasional oiling of door closers and hinges locks to ensure they work efficiently.
